Pine Valley Trails

Pine Valley

Pine Valley is located in the Dixie National Forest about 34 miles north of St. George. It is a quaint little town which has access to numerous trails that meander around Pine Valley Mountain that hikers and bikers can explore.

Since Pine Valley has a significantly higher elevation than St. George, it also has a remarkably different environment. Evergreen forest -- along with picturesque mountain meadows -- dominates the area. Further, temperatures are cooler here, and this makes it a pleasant summer get-a-way from St. George which typically has daily high temperatures above 100 degrees.

The main trail in the area is about 16 miles long and hikers should set aside two days to embark on this trek. It also ascends about 4,400 feet and then descends nearly 4,600 feet through out its route. Thus, hikers should be in good shape to not only cover the ground but to both climb up and down the mountain.

Some of the highlights on along this trail are: Whipple Valley, South Valley, Hop Canyon, Hidden Valley, and Nay Canyon. Camping in all these areas are great options when spending the night on the trail.

Early summer is the best time to venture on Pine Valley Mountain. At this time water is available at several points along the trail, but later on in the summer it dries up. Regardless of what time one embarks on the trail, it is wise to bring water.
