Those who would like to immerse themselves in the history of southern Utah, they can embark down the Pioneer Names Trail. It is an easy one half mile trail that takes people near places where pioneers -- Mormon settlers -- wrote their names in the rock with axle grease. The oldest name dates back to 1883. Also, cinder cone volcanoes dot the area north of St. George, and just to the north of Snow Canyon is one such cinder cone. The Cinder Cone Trail is a 1.5 mile path that climbs the extinct volcano. Despite its short length, this path is difficult as people must climb up and down steep slopes with volcanic rock that makes it hard for one to keep their footing. However, the views at the top of the volcano are well worth the effort. Besides, how often can one climb a volcano? For more information contact the Snow Canyon State Park staff at (435)628-2255. They can provide a detailed map of the canyon that has all of these trails clearly marked for your convenience.
