Zion is full of striking rock formations, diverse plant life and hiking trails that will please all ages!
Three reasons St. George, Utah has become a popular getaway destination is its mild winter temperatures, year-round recreation opportunities, and its close proximity to national parks, mainly Zion. A 229-square-mile spectacle of forested plateaus, narrow canyons and enormous sandstone monoliths, Zion National Park attracts approximately 2.5 million visitors per year. While Zion’s rock formations are its main attraction, the park is also a showcase of biodiversity, boasting approximately 78 species of mammals, 291 bird species and over 900 species of plants. Zion also features the 1.1-mile Zion-Mt. Caramel Tunnel, the park’s most famous man-made attraction.
Zion offers numerous hiking trails for every age and ability level. At the east end of the tunnel sits the trailhead of the Canyon Overlook Trail, a path providing amazing vistas without a strenuous climb. The one-mile (round trip) trail ends at a breathtaking view of lower Zion Canyon, including the Streaked Wall, West Temple, and the Towers of the Virgin, as well as the windows in the Zion-Mt. Caramel Tunnel. Zion Canyon is full of short, easy hikes the whole family can enjoy, including Emerald Pools, Riverside Walk and Weeping Rock, which leads to a hanging garden where it “rains” year round due to constant seepage of water through the porous sandstone. Adventurous hikers will enjoy the strenuous climbs to Angels Landing and Observation Point, two of the best top-down viewpoints in Zion Canyon.
St. George is a perfect base camp for a Zion National Park vacation. When staying in St. George, you will realize that there should be more than just Zion on your itinerary. You can enjoy exploring ghost towns, pioneer historic sites, a natural history museum, state parks, and recreation areas. During an evening on your Zion trip, do not miss one of Tuacahn Amphitheaters fantastic musical productions presented in an outdoor amphitheater surrounded by red rock cliffs.
